Which Pets Are Best For Young Children? | Pip Milburn

Having a pet is great for kids. It teaches them responsibility because they have to look after it and it also teaches them to be more social. Some pets are great for helping the family to stay active as well. When the kids are a bit older, you might think about getting a dog, but that isn’t always the best choice when they are young. It’s a lot of responsibility looking after a dog and most of the work will probably fall to you, so it’s best to wait until they are a bit older. When you are trying to choose their first pet, it’s best to go for something smaller that is easier to care for. These are some of the best options for your child’s first pet.

Fish are great for a first pet because they don’t require too much care. They still teach your child responsibility because they need to remember to feed them every day and clean the tank out every few weeks. However, it’s hard to go wrong when caring for a fish and they don’t need any stimulation. If you’re going away on holiday with the family, you just need somebody to pop round and feed them, so you don’t need to worry too much. This is something that you need to consider because you will need to make arrangements for pets when you are away. Fish also have a short life span, so if the kids get bored with them, you won’t be looking after them for years to come. It’s also a good way to introduce your children to the idea of pets passing away, which can be very distressing, but it is important.

Fish do make a good pet, but the kids can’t really get them out and play with them. If you want a pet that is easy to look after but is a bit more social, guinea pigs are a great choice. The guinea pig cages don’t take up much space at all, so it’s not like having a dog running around, but the kids can still take them out and play with them. The cage will need cleaning out more often than a fish tank, and it’s a bit more responsibility, but the kids should still be able to handle it.

Cats are a good stepping stone towards getting a dog because they take up a bit more room than a smaller pet like a guinea pig and they need a bit more care, but they are a lot more independent than a dog. Cats are fairly simple to look after because they do their own thing a lot of the time. You don’t need to worry too much about leaving them if you go away on holiday because they’re quite happy to be on their own, as long as somebody comes round each day to feed them, whereas a dog can’t really be left for more than a few hours without being distressed.

Getting a pet for your kids is a good idea but it’s important that you choose wisely. You don’t want to end up with a pet that is too much work.
