If your child loves sports or wants to follow in your footsteps as an athlete, then it’s important to do things that will encourage them to get more active, eat more healthily and ultimately train in the sports that they love.   1. Get to know their coach

Unless you are both their parent and coach, it’s a good idea to get to know the person that trains them in school or during weekend lessons. This will help you get a better understanding of the coach which translates into a more trusting relationship where you can track your child’s progress and help continue it even when their coach isn’t around.

  1. Avoid sporting conversations everywhere

Just because your child loves sports, it doesn’t mean they want to talk about it all the time. Make sure you talk about other things at the dinner table or when you’re walking with them from school.

  1. Get them some custom-designed shirts

Whether it’s a football uniform of their favourite team with their name on it or a basketball jersey with their number on the back, having their own sporting clothes is a fantastic motivator.   1. Don’t put your child on a pedestal

It’s understandable that you want to show off any achievements that your child has had, but make sure you’re not putting them up on a pedestal as it could add a lot of pressure for them to perform well at events.

However, it’s still important to celebrate those achievements and acknowledge the hard work that your child is putting into each training session and performance.

Whether it’s the latest football shoes or a fancy training machine that helps them improve specific muscles, don’t get caught into the trap of spending excessive amounts of money for things that don’t really help your child.

  1. Take them to activities that aren’t sports related

While it might be tempting to only take your child to sporting-related activities and days out, you should also take them to non-sporting related ones so they have time to relax their muscles or use them in different ways.
