Fontburn Reservoir | Play Park

Today’s family adventure took place at Fontburn Reservoir. It’s located in Northumberland, 15 miles north of Morpeth.

There is a spacious car park (parking fee applies) with a new play park and picnic area. The lodge shop sells hot and cold drinks, ice creams and snacks. There are also toilets on site including baby change facilities.

We arrived just after 1:30pm and headed towards the picnic area for our lunch. Izzy decided she didn’t want her sandwich as she was too excited about the new play area!

We had the play park to ourselves and Izzy spent a fun half hour exploring, climbing and swinging. There is a soft and spongy wood chip surface, toddler and regular swing, climbing frame with slide and a zip wire!

We then popped Izzy in our Toddler Tula and headed off for a walk.  The walk is a 3.5 mile circular route that takes you along the shoreline of the reservoir, through woodland, moorland and over babbling brooks. The views are stunning but the terrain is quite hard going. Wellies or walking boots are a must as it’s quite muddy and rocky in places.  Definitely not buggy friendly!

Anth (the husband) is very much into nature and the outdoors, he loved pointing different things out to Izzy. We saw House Martins, Herons, Wag Tails, a Robin Red Breast and a baby frog!

Anth also dragged me down to the bank of the reservoir with a promise of showing me a crocodile! What he actually showed me was a lone blue Croc sandal!!

We’ve had a brilliant day, exploring somewhere new. Have you visited any of Northumerland Water’s reservoirs? Where would you recommend we visit next?
